RWE npower today announced it is investigating the possibility of developing a new distillate oil-fired open cycle gas turbine (OCGT) plant at its existing site at Fawley, Hampshire.

Fawley power station
The 300MW facility – Fawley Oil-Fired Reserve Plant – would be located adjacent to the existing 1000 MW Fawley Power Station, which is due to close by the end of 2015 as a result of European environmental regulations, but within the existing site boundary. Given its existing connection to the national electricity grid and its proximity to areas of high electricity demand, RWE npower believes there is a strong case for continuing to deliver power generation from the site.
Distillate oil-fired OCGT plants are used strategically to balance the National Grid. Able to produce large amounts of electricity very quickly for a short period of time to provide additional capacity for the electricity network at times of peak demand, it is estimated that a plant of this kind would typically operate for up to 200 hours per year. More responsive power generation capacity such as this is also needed to support the increase in renewable energy sources, which operate intermittently.
Nick Stockdale, Fawley Power Station Manager, said: “The Fawley site presents a good opportunity to develop a new strategic reserve plant which offers a flexible power source for the National Grid.
“Recognising that any new development has potential impacts on the local community and environment, we will be undertaking thorough investigations and developing proposals which are sensitive to the local area.
“We are also committed to keeping local people informed and listening to their views and will be conducting a comprehensive consultation exercise. Details of this will be publicised in the next few months.”
